The most accurate Thanglish converter we can find
Most typing tools use fixed spelling rules, so they break the moment you write konjam as konjum. This one was built for how people actually type, and the numbers are from a held-out test set of 104,528 word pairs — text the model had never seen.
| System | Word exact match | Character accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| This converter | 78.95% | 90.67% |
| IndicXlit (AI4Bharat) | 52.50% | 82.61% |
Both systems evaluated on the identical held-out set of 104,528 Thanglish → Tamil word pairs. IndicXlit is the strongest openly available Indic transliteration model and is state of the art on the Dakshina benchmark; on casual, real-world Thanglish this converter is 26.45 points ahead of it on exact match.

Questions people actually ask
What is Thanglish?
Thanglish — also spelled Tanglish — is Tamil written using English letters. Instead of typing நான் வீட்டுக்கு போறேன், people type naan veetuku poren. It is how a large share of everyday Tamil messaging happens on WhatsApp, YouTube comments and search boxes, simply because most keyboards default to the Latin alphabet.
How do I convert Thanglish to Tamil?
Type your Tamil words in English letters in the box at the top of this page, exactly as they sound. Tamil script appears beside it as you type. Press Copy and paste it wherever you need it — WhatsApp, Instagram, Word, email or an online form.
Is this Thanglish to Tamil converter free?
Yes — completely free, with no signup, no login and no daily limit on how much text you can convert.
How accurate is the Tamil transliteration?
On a held-out test set of 104,528 real Thanglish word pairs it reaches 78.95% word-level exact match and 90.67% character accuracy. IndicXlit, the leading open Indic transliteration model, scores 52.5% and 82.61% on that same test set.
Word-level exact match is a strict measure: the whole word has to match perfectly. Character accuracy tells you how close the output is when it isn't perfect — and at 90.67%, near-misses are usually off by a single character.
Is this translation or transliteration?
Transliteration — sound for sound. naan veetuku poren becomes நான் வீட்டுக்கு போறேன், not the English meaning "I am going home". If you want meaning-for-meaning conversion, you need a translator, not this tool.
Do I need to install a Tamil keyboard?
No — that is the entire point. Keep your normal English keyboard, type Tamil words phonetically, and the Tamil script is produced for you.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The page is built for phones as well as laptops, and the copy button uses the standard mobile clipboard so you can paste straight into WhatsApp or Instagram.
Is my text stored?
No. Text is sent for conversion and returned. It is not saved to a database and it is not collected into any dataset.
Where does it still get things wrong?
Proper nouns — names of people and places — are the weakest area, which is true of every transliteration system. And because each word is converted independently, a pair like naan (I) and naam (we) can't be disambiguated from surrounding words. Check names before sending anything important.
